Assam: Dibrugarh University students held  rally against Child labour

GUWAHATI, NOV 19: “PUHOROR OBHIJATRI” a student led community-based organisation, has today staged a street play titled “PUHOR PRAYAKHI”, as part of the 10 days campaign initiative to create awareness against child labour in the areas around Dibrugarh town in front of (Pantaloons and DTP DYKE).

Students at the Centre for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication, Dibrugarh University who happen to be the main organisers of this campaign that has started today 19th November and is slated to run till the 30th November intimate that “Child labour among school going age children robs infants of their childhood memories and chance to grow up and be raised as children but rather as “young adults” which has an immense impact on how they relate with people in society.”

According to 2011 census report, the number of working children in the age group of 5-14 years in the state of Assam increased to 351416 up from 99512 in 2001.

Its on such premises therefore, that students took it upon themselves to champion this social cause to enlighten the need for society to vehemently draft measures of fighting and criminalising child labour through vigorous sensitisation.

Child labour perpetrators seem to be above the law and are walking away Scot-free without being held liable for their actions due to corruption tendencies. However, with this sensitisation campaign, communities will be awakened about the cardinal role that they need to play to safeguard the future of school going age children.

There is hope and confidence that the PUHOROR OBHIJATRI’s campaign against child labour will go a long way in developing conviction in the communities that there is need to ensure that every child goes to school, receives education and not forced to work will change the apathy of the people towards child labour violators hence completely eradicating the vice from the community.

PUHOROR OBHIJATRI is a community-based organization committed to finding new ways to prevent child labour and building a society where every child grows up in a safe, loving family.
