Guwahati, Dec 19: A multi-agency security meeting was held in Dibrugarh district on Monday in presence of Assam Special DGP GP Singh.
Officials from Army, CRPF, Assam Rifles, central and state intelligence agencies participated in the meeting.
Talking to media persons, Assam Special DGP GP Singh said, “A multi-agency security meeting was held in Dibrugarh where officials from various departments participated in the meeting. We have getting reports of extortion activities and extortion calls from Ulfa(I). We have got inputs of extortion calls in the upper Assam area,”.
“We have arrested many persons related with the banned outfit. The extortion calls are coming from Tirap, Changlang and Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh. We will take strict action against the persons who are involved in extortion related activities. Our crackdown against extortion will go on and we will take all possible measures to end the extortion activities,” GP Singh said.
Sources said the Ulfa(I) has been giving extortion calls to the businessman of the upper Assam area to collect maximum funds for their outfit.
“The Ulfa(I) has reruited some trusted linkman to collect funds for their outfit. The banned outfit has been facing problem due to fund crunch. Recently, the outfit has trying hard through extortion calls to collect as much fund for their outfit” said a source.
Meanwhile, the security forces have started operation against the rebel outfit and taking all possible measures to contain the extortion activities.
