Sikkim: Heavy rainfall & strong wind lashes lower Samdong, woman crushed to death

Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old woman crushed to death after a tree fall over her house due to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in Sikkim’s lower Samdong village on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Sarita Rai (25).

According to reports, the Samdong village is about 27-28 km the capital Gangtok was hit by heavy rainfall and strong winds at around 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM.

The locals said the tragedy happened when the victim was in her kitchen when an uprooted tree crashed on her house killing her on the spot.

The deceased’s body was recovered from the incident spot with the assistance of Makha outpost police officials and locals.

It was later taken to the government medical hospital for a post-mortem examination in order to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Many trees were uprooted due to the heavy wind and blockade the roads causing problem for the movement of the people.

“Restoration work has been going on in lower Samdong area. Many trees were uprooted and electric poles were damaged. Our team has been working to restore electricity. As per government norms, compensation will be given to the kin of the deceased,” said an official.
